BEGINNING ODISSI INDIAN TEMPLE DANCE TECHNIQUE focuses exclusively on Odissi Temple Dance, a major ancient Indian classical dance that originated in the temples of Odisha.
Passed down from guru to dancer for thousands of years, poses within the Odissi dance discipline can be seen in sculptures found at Harappan archaeological sites, one of the earliest civilizations, as well as the dance poses depicted in sculptures at Kalinga temples in ancient Odisha.
Odissi is traditionally a dance-drama genre of performance art where the dancers and musicians play out a story, or a spiritual or devotional poem from Hindu texts, using symbolic costumes, body movement, mudras, padas, and expressions as written in ancient Sanskrit literature.
Odissi, in its history, was performed predominantly by women. This female-centric style of Odissi is today carried forward by Dr. Ratna Roy, recognized by India as the foremost scholar and guru of the Mahari-influenced Odissi Dance. The Mahari were the temple dances of the Jagannath Temple where the modern form of Odissi originated.
Moria teaches the method and style of her guru, Dr. Ratna Roy, in the Mahari-informed ancient Indian Temple Dance.
Beginners with little or no background in
Odissi Temple Dance are most welcome.
