RIVER CITY RAQS
APRIL 4th ~ 7th 2019
5th ANNUAL BELLY DANCE FESTIVAL
"Where Great Dancers Reunite"
Workshops. Shopping. Shows. Competition. Parties
As North East Florida’s annual Belly Dance Festival,
RIVER CITY RAQS has become a hub for local, national,
and international instructors and performers.
Organized by the staff and students of the Anais Belly Dance Studio in Jacksonville, the festival strives to bring together instructors and vendors that reflect the rich variety of bellydance styles that are practiced in Florida.
Workshops feature both traditional and fusion styles, as well as classes designed to assist burgeoning belly dance business owners. The workshops include free warm-up classes each day.
The festival also hosts after-workshop events each night.
On Friday, participants have the opportunity to perform
in a competition in either the Professional Oriental,
Rising Star, or Troupe categories.
On Saturday, instructors perform at the Gala Show.
Thursday April 4th 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Moria has traveled the globe researching ancient sacred dances that were connected via old trade routes.
Her selection of multiple styles of temple dance and ancient dance techniques combine to create an aesthetic that evokes the mythological, archetypal, and muscular strength.
Friday April 5th 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm
ODISSI TRIBAL FUSION BELLY DANCE offers the dancer a methodology for integrating this rapidly growing art form into her belly dance performances.
As harbinger of this specific style of fusion, Moria was the first to bring these two styles of movement together, and now instructs dancers in the way she learned, created, and now performs this unique combination of esthetics.
Passed from Guru to student for thousands of years, Odissi Indian Temple dance is one of the oldest classical dance forms on Earth.
Moria spends time annually in Orissa (the homeland of Odissi) intensively studying and performing this exquisite dance, as well as researching and learning weekly from her Indian-born guru in America, Ratna Roy, who was a pupil of the last living Mahari (sacred temple dancer).
Moria's Odissi temple dance fusion workshop is designed for you to learn Odissi’s most fundamental combinations and exercises and how they can be applied to your Tribal Fusion belly dance performances and practice.
In ODISSI TRIBAL FUSION BELLY DANCE you will learn the body isolations, temple stance, Odissi posture, sacred geometry, and mudras of this ancient devotional dance and how these profound elements can be applied to modern music and movement.
Sunday April 7th 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm
Bellyrolls, half-sided belly isolations, and reverse bellyrolls will be featured as well as how to integrate these subtle muscular isolations into movements that read strongly on stage.
Liquid arms and body flow, beautiful facial and hand expressions, as well as how to maintain a strong posture from the upper back are emphasized.
You will learn control and isolation while dancing with the grace and physical dexterity required for liquid techniques.
The goal is for you to be able to visualize receiving movement through one part of your body while keeping the audience’s attention as you send the movement out to create expression from your face all the way through to your fingertips.
Emphasis will be placed on laybacks, flexibility, and floor work.
*Kneepads are recommended.
*All levels are welcome.
